A Look Back at Disaster
Development of an information graphic for National Geographic's twentieth anniversary feature on the 2004 Indian Ocean disaster. It needed to show the scale of impact of the tsunami while preventing it from overwhelming the viewer. Complex yet clear.
Process
I illustrated the biggest visual in Procreate as the main focus of the image and as a way to break down the amount of information into sections. One for the land, one for the ocean, and one for the earth below. I also included a few smaller vectors (Earth, DART system, building) to further break down information.
This design has a clear narrative flow; from when the tsunami starts, to preventions created since its impact. I prioritized organization, distinctiveness, and overall cohesive structure to create a design that upheld National Geographic brand standards while still remaining interesting.
