Connecting The Disconnected
Connecting The Disconnected (formerly named "How can Peoria Become Walkable?" in the moodboard), is a interactive article created in collaboration with journalism major Isabela Nieto. The challenge was to pick a topic and then visualize the article in Figma. Our idea evolved into making Peoria, IL more walkable as a city by connecting three of its distinctive areas via tram system.
You can view this project in the Figma prototype below.
Process
The moodboard was created first. It wasn't until much later in this project that we added the tram idea, so it's exempt from this. I chose the palette from the Peoria city logo, adding gray to introduce a neutral tone. For typography, I used Catamaran due to its versatility. It feels balanced, clean, and has something subtle that I felt fit with the topic. I think the most key feature of the moodboard, however, are the vectors created. The lines of roads work to produce a visual flow along the replica of Peoria's map.
In the final design, I wanted it to have a lot of animations between slides to create an easy flow. This would allow viewers to engage with the information more readily. I also maintained a lot of white space to keep attention on the most important information. The goal of this was to educate viewers on potential shortcomings from Peoria, IL and how these things may be improved in the future.
